The internal components of a battery are damaged by age, under-hood temperatures, vehicle movements, and extreme cold and hot environment conditions, reducing its life expectancy. Since battery failure is a leading cause of vehicle breakdowns, routine battery inspection, maintenance, and replacements are recommended actions to assure your battery will start.
The average lifespan of a car battery is four years. Our recommendation is to have your battery tested every six months. If you see any of the following warning signs, have your battery tested right away:
According to a study conducted in 2010 by the Battery Council International, a vehicle's battery lasts an average of 55 months*. The ability of your vehicle's battery to hold a charge as well as its ability to be recharged determines how long it will last. Humidity, temperature, and other environmental factors can all have an impact on battery life.

Your vehicle's battery can be drained in a variety of ways, including leaving your lights on, having a bad alternator, and even getting old. To learn more, visit our Warning Signs of a Dying Car Battery page.
Your vehicle's battery size is determined by the year, make, model, and engine size of your vehicle, and falls into one of several groups. If you're unsure about your vehicle's battery requirements, consult your owner's manual or speak with a Just Tires technician about the manufacturer's recommendations.
The majority of vehicles use 12-volt electrical systems, but some (such as hybrid/electric vehicles) are heavily electrified and use higher voltage systems. Some older vehicles also had systems that were less than 12 volts.
A multimeter, which tells you the voltage of your battery, can be used to test your vehicle's battery. The voltage of fully charged batteries should be 12.6 volts or higher. This reading should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts when the engine is running. If you're not sure how your battery is doing, stop by your nearest Just Tires for a battery inspection today.
A bad battery can be identified by a few telltale signs, such as a slow-starting car where the engine is struggling to turn over. See our page on Warning Signs of a Dying Car Battery for more information.
